Position Summary
CRS is looking for a candidate to fill the position of Vessel Captain for the South Coast European Green Crab Control Project in Tofino, BC. This project works alongside Tla–o-qui-aht, Ahousaht and T’Sou-ke governments and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to remove invasive European green crabs in an attempt to investigate effective methods to mitigate and remediate the damage that they pose to shared environmental, economic and cultural resources within the Pacific Region.

Responsibilities
This position requires the successful applicant to be based out of Tofino, BC or surrounding communities, with work departing daily from a dock in Tofino. Under the direction of the Senior Project Lead and Field Team Supervisor, a typical 8 hour day includes : pre-trip safety planning, being in charge of vessel operations under all types of weather conditions, transiting to sites, deploying and recovering traps, identifying, counting and measuring crab and fish species, inputting data into collection software, disposing of European green crabs and cleaning and maintaining vessels and equipment.

Duties
● In-depth understanding and experience operating and maintaining marine vessels
●Knowledge of local weather and ocean hazards around Clayoquot Sound
● Familiar with marine operations standards and commitment to upholding OH&S regulations
● Baseline knowledge of local marine ecology, including identification and knowledge of intertidal and subtidal species
● Comfortable working on a vessel in varying marine and environmental conditions
● Ability to lift 50+ lbs and use moderate physical effort and/or dexterity of equipment, tools or materials (i.e. reaching overhead, bending/stooping, lifting, repetitive tasks etc.)
● Ability to work in a team environment
● Must possess strong planning and time management skills
● Exhibit strong interpersonal skills, tact, respect and diplomacy
● Demonstrate sound judgment as well as strong verbal communication skills
● Background and understanding of scientific methodology, practices and analysis with proficiency in data collection software is beneficial but not an requirement
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, Google Drive, Slack, and Buddy Punch
● Exhibit cultural sensitivity and awareness● Ability to adapt to a flexible schedule

Desired Qualifications and Education
Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications:
● Class 5 Driver's License required
●Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) required
●Small Domestic Vessel, Basic Safety (SVD-BS) required
● VHF Marine Radio Course (ROC-M) required
● Marine Basic First Aid (or equivalent) required
● Experience working in the marine environment and operating marine vessels in Clayoquot Sound required

Working Conditions
● 8 hr workday / 40 hr work week (typically 8am to 4pm- although sometimes varies based on tides)
● Monday to Friday, although weekend work may occasionally be required
● CRS operates in adverse weather conditions
